100 sedie per un esperimento urbano e un'inaspettata
performance musicale sulle rive del Tevere

An urban experiment: 100 movable chairs and
an unexpected musical performance on the Tiber River

A project by Lisa Bielawa and Robert Hammond
Produced by Tevereterno

Chance Encounter on the Tiber was the pilot for an urban revitalization plan combined with a musical performance composed expressly for outdoor public space. The project turned the walkway along the Tiber River in the center of Rome into a vibrant social open space by focusing on two simple means: movable seating and musical performance.

On May 31, 2010, one hundred red movable chairs were placed along the Tiber and there were 30-minute musical performances by American soprano Susan Narucki, Brooklyn Rider String Quartet from New York, and the local Blue Chamber Orchestra of Chance Encounter, co-conceived by Bielawa and Narucki and composed by Bielawa expressly for outdoor public space. On Sunday May 30, as part of the opening weekend of MAXXI, there were two preview performances of the project at the museum.

12th International Venice Biennale of Architecture at the opening of the Italian Pavilion on August 29, 2010

The most recent site for Bielawa and Hammond's urban experiment was at the 12th International Venice Biennale of Architecture at the opening of the Italian Pavilion on August 29, 2010. The collaborators combined the placement of 100 moveable chairs in the Giardino delle Vergini with musical performances of Chance Encounter. The project was part of the opening of AILATI.Reflections of the Future, curated by Luca Molinari.
